The Pink Gift

One of my dear friends had his 25th birthday last September 27. Yes, I'm with the generation who just turned quarter of a century. I met him as an illustrator when I was working with Xlibris Philippines as an Illustrations Coordinator. He's one of the few honest people I've met in there, so I just had to keep him as a friend. Anyway, I made him this, an image that carries two things he likes; a petite girl and a leather collar. Yes, don't worry, he's not a creep. He's far from that. Muse Sketches

I've been trying to find beautiful faces to inspire me to draw, as usual. Just like my old days in Myspace, trying to find a beautiful face from perfection groups. Jacqueline is the only one who remains to inspire me even today. I've been through old films and random deviants in DA. So far I find very few that truly inspire me. These sketches are not very well done but I'm still putting it here. These are not portraits. These are images made from how I perceive these beautiful people. It's not very good yet.

I was also given the great opportunity to do a short performance piece in a straitjacket in their debut album launch party.

Uncharted Waters

I never truly learned how to properly use watercolors but I've been using them since I can remember--smearing them all over the paper in thick undiluted pigments probably egotistically thinking I'm Van Gogh or Michaelangelo. I probably had the false notion of thinking that they're the same tubes used for oil painting. I was too young to know what they are exactly.

I wasted too many tubes when I would draw and my mother would frustratingly just tell me how much mess I was making. As a child--I could not understand what "mess" was. All I knew what that, I was being as artistic as those artists I saw in our encyclopedia. Years past, eleven years really,  till I learned to color how much pigment I have to use. My love for thick pigment can still be seen with these.

A Happy Sense of Achievement

Early last year, with the help of  22 Tango Creatives & Maya Franco Design Group, I was commissioned to create a logo for a new restaurant in Cebu. I've had experience in making logos before not of this type.  The concept was to make it look sophisticated and young but should embody a brush of Filipino culture since it was for a Filipino restaurant. These were the first attempts--very cafe-like and they don't really embody the Filipino culture of a fun and happy eating. I was trying to put in the image concepts of a ladle, a candle, a plate and a fish. But they didn't work very well. One even resembles an already existing restaurant's logo. So I had to scratch out the idea.

Cheng Tju, one of the editors  for Liquid City Volume Three I'm working with, asked me to show him sample comics. So I made this simple wordless comic. I had a meeting with his mangaka colleagues via Skype while he was in the Philippines for a talk he guested in Ateneo de Manila. A half hour interview with was made for his research on Southeast Asian Women Comic Artists which included the discussion on my comic style and concepts.

The idea for this wordless comic came from my personal beliefs as a child. I used to believe that every dark corner, empty room, hidden nook and some water puddles (the rarely seen ones) is a doorway to another world. We can be there anytime we want--unfortunately, we always miss the opportunity because we have been wired to ignore them.

“Fables for Japan” is an anthology book of fiction, poems, sequential stories (comic books), and artwork. These are original works centered around the theme of Japanese folklore, fables, and myths. The book is available in [link] and all proceeds go the victims of the March 11th earthquake.

35 writers and artists from all over the world bring these stories to life, including the talents of David Lloyd, J.C. Vaughn, Mark Wheatley, Charles Whipple, Christopher Golden, Gareth Sleightholme, and so many more.

I've been working with *jason-minor aka Temujin on the second book for Fables for Japan. He's been very generous to extend deadlines for me. The artwork above is an illustration to one of the stories. The book cover was made by David Lloyd. The other illustrations I made for this book are below.
